Protein chips vs. regular chips: what’s the difference?

September 1, 2026Nanosupps

Protein chips are not “fit chips”. And regular chips are not evil. The difference is more useful to look at with less moralising and more label reading. A product does not automatically become the better choice for every person and every situation just because it says protein chips.

What are protein chips?

A savoury, crunchy snack formulated with a more prominent protein source than classic chips. Nanosupps BBQ Protein CHIPS, for example, uses chickpea, rice and pea protein and contains 8.2 g of protein per 40 g bag.

How are regular chips different?

Traditional potato or corn chips are generally positioned primarily for enjoyment and snacking; protein is usually not their headline benefit. The actual difference always depends on the brand and recipe.

What should you check when buying?

Alongside protein, compare serving size, energy, salt, fat, fibre and the ingredient list. Comparing labels is much more useful than the slogan competition happening on the front of the pack.

And what about taste?

Here comes the FMCG reality: if it does not taste good, you will not buy it again. Functional benefits may help win the first purchase; taste is what gets a product onto your favourites list. Protein snacking is not punishment. It is meant to be enjoyable.
